About Gravesend
In the early days of the Dutch colony in what is now known as New Netherland, Gravesend was one of the first settlements to be established. After the English conquest, it became one of the six initial settlements in Kings County, which was located in the area that would later become New York colony. Gravesend is famous for being one of the earliest towns to be formed by a woman, Lady Deborah Moody was the pioneer behind its establishment. This makes Gravesend the only English chartered town in what later became Kings County.
