About Fort Jay

Formerly a U.S. Army outpost, Governors Island in New York Harbor is home to a coastal bastion fort known as Fort Jay. Named after John Jay, a Federalist Party member, and a founding father of the United States, Fort Jay is the island's oldest standing defensive structure. It was originally constructed in 1794 for defensive purposes against attacks on Upper New York Bay, but it has since been repurposed.
